The Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) has fundamentally changed how nursing competency is evaluated. No longer can candidates rely purely on memorized knowledge; candidates must demonstrate real-time clinical judgment across 6 cognitive steps: recognize cues, analyze cues, prioritize hypotheses, generate solutions, take actions, and evaluate outcomes.
1. The 6-Step Clinical Judgment Measurement Model
When examining unfolding case studies, candidates receive client clinical charts, lab results, and progressive vital signs. Approach each layer systematically by identifying critical vs non-urgent deviations before choosing nursing interventions.
2. Scoring Rules: Partial Credit & Bowtie Questions
Unlike classical NCLEX multiple choice where a question was strictly all-or-nothing, NGN introduces +/- scoring models for extended multiple response and bowtie formats. Understanding that choosing an incorrect option penalizes a point requires students to select only options they are clinically certain of.
